A Shopify gift card can fail at checkout for several very different reasons: the code was copied incorrectly, the card has no usable balance, it was deactivated or expired, the customer is trying to buy another gift card, or the checkout itself has a separate payment problem. The fastest way to solve the ticket is to separate gift-card status from checkout eligibility before issuing a replacement code.
For store staff, one detail matters immediately: Shopify does not show the full gift card code in the admin after the card has been issued. Staff normally see identifying details such as the final characters, while the customer needs the original full code delivered to them.
Start with the exact error the customer sees
Ask for the wording of the checkout message and the last four characters of the gift card, but do not ask the customer to post the full code in a public review, social media comment or shared support channel. The exact message helps distinguish an invalid code from an insufficient balance or a checkout restriction.
If other promotions are also involved, check them separately. A gift card problem is not the same as a discount rule problem. For percentage, fixed amount, product and shipping discounts, use the checklist in Shopify Discount Code Not Working: Check Eligibility, Combinations and Markets.
1. Confirm that the customer has the full gift card code
The customer must enter the complete gift card code they received, not only the last four characters visible to staff in the Shopify admin. A screenshot from the admin that shows masked characters cannot be converted back into the original code.
Gift card codes are case-insensitive, so uppercase versus lowercase is usually not the cause. Copy-and-paste errors can still happen when a customer includes an extra space or confuses characters in a manually typed code.
2. Check whether the gift card is active, expired or deactivated
Open the gift card record and confirm its current status. An active card with a positive balance should be treated differently from a card that has expired or been deactivated.
- Active: continue with balance and checkout checks.
- Expired: review the store’s expiry policy and applicable consumer rules before changing the expiry or replacing value.
- Deactivated: do not assume the original code can simply be reactivated. Follow the supported replacement or refund workflow for the situation.
If the card was intentionally disabled because of fraud or a mistaken issue, document the reason before giving the customer a new one.
3. Verify the remaining balance, not the original value
A gift card may still exist even when most or all of its value has already been spent. Check the current balance and transaction history rather than the amount originally issued.
If the remaining balance is lower than the order total, Shopify can normally apply the available gift card balance and let the customer pay the remainder with another accepted payment method. A zero balance, however, cannot reduce the order further.
4. Check whether the customer is trying to buy another gift card
A Shopify gift card cannot be used to purchase another gift card. If the cart contains a gift card product, remove that product and test again with a normal item. This is easy to miss when the rest of the cart is valid.
For mixed carts, test the checkout with the simplest possible combination first. The goal is to determine whether the failure follows the gift card itself or only appears with a particular product or checkout configuration.
5. Test the code on a clean checkout
Reproduce the problem using the same store, market and cart conditions where possible. A useful diagnostic sequence is:
- add one ordinary in-stock product;
- go to checkout without any discount code;
- enter the gift card;
- confirm whether the balance is applied;
- if money remains due, complete the payment-method step without placing an unnecessary live order.
If the gift card applies correctly in a clean checkout, the original issue may be caused by the cart, market, another discount or a separate payment configuration rather than by the card.
6. Separate gift-card problems from payment-method problems
A gift card can reduce the amount due without becoming the only payment method. When the card balance does not cover the full order, checkout still needs a valid method for the remainder. A declined card, unavailable accelerated checkout or payment-method restriction can therefore make the transaction fail after the gift card was successfully applied.
If the customer says checkout keeps selecting an unexpected payment option, see Shopify Checkout Remembers the Last Payment Method to test the payment side separately.
Can a gift card pay for shipping and tax?
A Shopify gift card can be applied toward the order total, including amounts such as shipping and taxes that are part of the checkout total. The practical limitation is the available gift-card balance. If the final order total is higher, the customer pays the difference with another accepted payment method.
This is why testing only the product subtotal can be misleading. The cart may appear covered until shipping or tax is calculated later in checkout.
What if the customer never received the gift card email?
First confirm the customer email address and the order or gift-card record. Then use the appropriate Shopify resend or customer-notification workflow rather than creating a second card immediately. Issuing a duplicate without checking the first card can leave two active values in circulation.
If the store has broader notification problems, compare the case with Shopify Store Credit Email Notifications. Gift cards and store credit are different features, but the support method is similar: verify the account, the destination address and the message history before adding more value.
Gift card versus store credit: do not treat them as the same balance
Shopify gift cards and store credit can both reduce what a customer pays, but they have different records and customer experiences. A customer who says “my credit is missing” may actually be looking for store credit while support is checking a gift card, or the other way around.
| Check | Gift card | Store credit |
|---|---|---|
| Customer uses a code | Yes, for a gift card code | Normally tied to the customer account rather than a transferable gift-card code |
| Admin can reveal original full code later | No | Not applicable in the same way |
| Support should check | Status, balance, last characters, transactions | Customer account, balance and credit history |
What happens when an order paid with a gift card is refunded?
Refund handling should follow the original transaction and the current state of the gift card. Before promising that money will appear on a bank card, check how the order was paid. If all or part of the order was paid with a gift card, that portion may need to return to gift-card value rather than to an unrelated payment method.
For the part refunded to a card or other payment provider, delays can happen after Shopify marks the refund as completed. The separate troubleshooting path is explained in Shopify Refund Completed but Customer Has Not Received the Money.
Be careful with expired or deactivated cards during a refund
Do not discover at the end of a refund that the destination gift card can no longer be used. Check its current state before completing the workflow. An expired card may require an expiry adjustment where appropriate, while a deactivated card may require a different supported resolution rather than an assumption that it can be switched back on.
When the original code cannot be used, keep the replacement process traceable: note the old card, the remaining or refunded value, the new card if one is issued, and the reason for the change.
A support checklist for “gift card code not working”
- Confirm the store and checkout where the code is being used.
- Ask for the exact error and only the identifying characters needed to find the record.
- Confirm the card is active.
- Check the remaining balance and transaction history.
- Verify the customer has the full original code.
- Make sure the cart is not trying to purchase another gift card with a gift card.
- Test a simple cart without unrelated discounts.
- If a balance remains due, test the second payment method separately.
- Check whether the issue is actually store credit rather than a gift card.
- Before issuing a replacement, make sure the original value will not remain spendable unintentionally.
When the gift card works but checkout still fails
If the balance is applied correctly and the failure occurs later, stop troubleshooting the code. Check shipping availability, market settings and payment methods instead. A gift card can be valid while the checkout cannot complete for an unrelated reason.
This distinction prevents unnecessary replacements and duplicate compensation. The most useful support note is not “gift card broken,” but a precise result such as “active card, £35 balance, applied successfully; checkout fails only when the remaining £12 is charged to the selected payment method.”
Frequently asked questions
Can support see a customer’s full Shopify gift card code?
Shopify limits access to the full code after issuance. Staff should identify the card using the available admin details rather than asking the customer to publish the complete code.
Can a customer use a gift card and another payment method?
Yes, when the gift card balance is lower than the order total, the available balance can be applied and the remainder paid with another supported method.
Can a Shopify gift card be used to buy another gift card?
No. If the cart contains a gift card product, that purchase cannot be paid for with a Shopify gift card.
Can a discount code and gift card be used on the same checkout?
A gift card is a payment instrument rather than a normal discount code. Discounts can still have their own eligibility and combination rules, so troubleshoot the discount separately if checkout rejects it.
