When a Shopify discount code does not work, reproduce the customer’s exact cart and check the discount’s dates, eligible products, minimum requirement, customer restrictions, market and combination settings. A code that exists in the admin is not necessarily valid for every checkout.
Start with the message shown at checkout. “Not valid for the items in your cart” points you towards different settings than a message about combining discounts. Record the message before changing the promotion.
- Test the exact variant, quantity, customer and delivery country.
- Check whether an automatic discount is already active.
- Compare the cart subtotal with the discount’s actual minimum requirement.
- Distinguish a discount code from a compare-at sale price.
How do you reproduce the failed checkout?
Ask for the code, product names, selected variants, quantities and delivery country. If the promotion is restricted to certain customers, use an appropriate test customer rather than your own unrestricted account.
Build a new cart with those details and note the price before and after applying the code. A screenshot of the final total helps, but the underlying cart details are essential. “Two shirts” can mean two eligible items or one eligible item and an excluded variant.
If the wrong size or colour reaches the cart, resolve the Shopify variant-selection problem first. A discount can be correctly refusing a product that the customer never intended to add.
Which basic discount settings should you check?
Open the discount in the Shopify admin and inspect its active period, usage limits, product or collection selection, minimum requirements and customer eligibility. Check the store time zone when a promotion starts or ends at a particular hour.
Read the minimum requirement in context. A promotion limited to selected products should not be tested using an unrelated item to bring the cart up to the advertised amount. Likewise, a minimum quantity rule is not the same as a minimum spend rule.
| Customer’s situation | Setting to examine | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| The same code worked yesterday | End date, usage limit and later edits | Compare the current settings with the promotion as advertised |
| It works for one product but not another | Eligible products, collections and variants | Test each item separately |
| It works for staff but not the customer | Customer or segment eligibility | Use the intended customer conditions |
| The cart looks large enough | Which items count towards the minimum | Remove unrelated items and check the qualifying amount |
Why does Shopify say the discount cannot be combined?
Shopify distinguishes product, order and shipping discounts. Combining them depends on the settings of each discount and the combinations available to the store. Both sides must allow the relevant combination; enabling it on only the new code may not be enough.
Look for an automatic promotion already affecting the cart. The customer may see no code entered and still have an active discount. Where eligible discounts cannot all apply together, Shopify can apply the best available discount or permitted combination.
Test the code without the competing promotion, then with it. If it works alone, the problem is likely in combination rules or eligibility, not the spelling of the code. Certain combinations, including multiple product discounts on the same item, have additional plan requirements.
For example, a store advertises a product discount plus free delivery. Test the product saving and the shipping saving separately, then together. Confirm both are allowed to combine and that the selected shipping option is eligible.
Can the customer’s country or currency change the result?
Yes. Shopify’s market settings and any market assignments on the discount can affect eligibility. By default, codes work across markets, but their rules still apply. Customer eligibility does not disappear because the shopper switches countries.
Reproduce the country selection and currency used by the shopper, then check the actual checkout. Do not assume a threshold displayed in one currency proves eligibility in another without checking how the promotion is configured.
If the currency changes unexpectedly between the product page and checkout, first investigate Shopify Markets and currency switching. Otherwise, you may alter a working discount to compensate for a separate market-selection problem.
Why does a free-shipping code still fail?
Check the destination, minimum requirement, applicable shipping conditions and available rate. A free-shipping discount does not solve an address for which the store has no eligible delivery service.
If checkout says no shipping is available, follow the checks for missing Shopify shipping rates. Test the customer’s actual postcode and products, especially when different shipping profiles or fulfilment locations are involved.
Also confirm what the offer promises. Free standard delivery is different from free express delivery. The code, promotional wording and available checkout options should describe the same benefit.
Is a crossed-out price the same as a discount?
No. A compare-at price is part of sale-price presentation. Discount codes and automatic discounts apply according to separate rules. A crossed-out price on the product page does not demonstrate that a code has been accepted.
Compare the actual line-item prices, discount labels and final order total. This prevents a support conversation in which the customer expects an additional reduction but the promotion describes the price already displayed.
How should you fix the promotion?
- Record the failing cart and the expected saving.
- Identify the specific rule causing the rejection.
- Decide whether that rule matches the advertised offer.
- Correct the rule or clarify the offer.
- Retest one eligible cart and one deliberately ineligible cart.
- Check the total and shipping charge before ending the investigation.
A useful fix makes the intended offer work while preserving its boundaries. Removing every restriction may clear an error, but it can create a much larger promotion than the business planned.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a discount work in my test but not for the shopper?
Your customer identity, products, quantities, market or active promotions may differ. Match the customer’s conditions before comparing results.
Can an automatic discount block a code?
A combination restriction can prevent both savings applying together. Check the automatic discount as well as the code.
Should I recreate the code immediately?
First identify the failing rule. Recreating the same settings can reproduce the same problem and make the promotion harder to track.
What should I send Shopify Support?
Provide the exact error, discount settings, affected variants, market, test customer conditions and the steps that reproduce it. Avoid sending unnecessary personal customer data.
