Shop Campaigns Analytics with ShopifyQL: Measure ROAS, CAC and Customer Segments

Use Shop Campaigns data in ShopifyQL, analytics apps and BI tools to measure ROAS, CAC, customer segments and net campaign performance.

Shop Campaigns performance data is now available through ShopifyQL, so merchants can analyze campaign spend, sales, orders, ROAS, average order value and customer acquisition cost outside the Shop advertising screen. The data can feed supported analytics apps, CSV workflows and business-intelligence tools connected to Shopify’s Admin GraphQL API. Before combining it with GA4 or paid-media dashboards, align attribution, date ranges, customer segments and the treatment of refunds and canceled orders.

The most important caveat is that Shop Campaigns metrics answer a campaign-attribution question, not the same question as last-click web analytics. Shopify’s campaign sales metric is based on gross sales and can include refunded or canceled orders, while acquisition charges are not refunded when an attributed order is later canceled or refunded. Build a net-performance layer before declaring a campaign profitable.

Last reviewed: August 31, 2026. Shopify announced ShopifyQL availability for Shop Campaigns on August 10, 2026. Data support in third-party apps depends on each provider’s implementation timeline.

What Changed With Shop Campaigns Analytics?

Shop Campaigns reporting was previously centered on the Shopify Admin experience. Shopify’s August 10, 2026 release makes campaign-level performance data available through ShopifyQL, which allows supported external tools to place Shop Campaigns beside other marketing channels.

Shopify documents the following available measures by campaign, customer segment and time period:

  • ad spend;
  • sales;
  • orders;
  • return on ad spend;
  • average order value;
  • average customer acquisition cost.

Merchants can still view campaign performance directly in the Analytics or Advertising areas of Shopify Admin. ShopifyQL expands how the data can be exported, modeled and combined.

Why this matters

A marketing team can compare Shop Campaigns with Google, Meta, email and other sources in one reporting workflow instead of copying totals manually. Finance can connect billed acquisition costs to campaign results. Customer teams can compare new and lapsed segments over time.

How Shop Campaigns Work

Shop Campaigns is Shopify’s advertising and offers program for acquiring or re-engaging customers at a configured cost per acquisition. Ads can run in Shop, the Shop website and Shopify Product Network by default. Eligible merchants can also opt into third-party placements.

A campaign is built around an objective, audience, maximum customer acquisition cost, target order value, budget, countries and channels. Shopify can target new customers, lapsed customers or both, with optional segment overrides.

Default and optional placements

Shop and Shopify Product Network are included by default. Third-party placements can extend reach across supported platforms, but Shopify runs those ads through its own accounts rather than the merchant’s advertising accounts. That makes Shopify’s campaign data the authoritative source for billed Shop Campaigns acquisition.

Overlapping campaigns

Multiple active campaigns can compete for similar audiences. Shopify indicates that budget can be reallocated toward the best-performing campaign first. When one campaign’s spend changes unexpectedly, check audience overlap before blaming the data connector.

Shop Campaigns Metric Definitions

Metric What it answers Important caveat
Ad spend How much campaign budget was used? Compare with billed acquisition charges and credits.
Sales What gross order value is attributed to the campaign? Shopify says this can include refunded or canceled orders.
Orders How many orders were attributed? Attribution does not guarantee the order remained fulfilled or profitable.
ROAS How much attributed order value was generated per acquisition-cost unit? Gross ROAS can overstate net return after refunds and COGS.
Average order value What was the average attributed order value? Confirm whether the selected report uses gross or adjusted sales.
Average CAC What did an acquired customer cost on average? Segment-specific maximums and partial charges can affect the result.

ROAS is not profit

ROAS divides attributed order value by campaign cost. It does not automatically subtract cost of goods, payment fees, shipping subsidies, returns or support cost. A profitable-campaign model needs contribution margin.

CAC needs a customer definition

Shop Campaigns can target first-time and lapsed customers. Do not compare a win-back CAC directly with a new-customer CAC without identifying the segment and expected lifetime value.

For payment and platform cost context, see our guide to Shopify fees per sale.

Attribution, Refunds and Canceled Orders

Shopify attributes an order to Shop Campaigns when an eligible customer redeems a campaign offer or buys after viewing a campaign ad under Shopify’s attribution rules. An attributed order and customer receive a Shop Cash offers acquired tag, although Shopify notes that the tag can take up to eight hours to appear.

Attributed sales can remain after a refund

The campaign Sales metric is defined as gross sales and can include refunded or canceled orders. Shopify also states that acquisition charges are not refunded when an attributed order is canceled or refunded. A gross dashboard can therefore show attractive sales and ROAS even when the merchant ultimately kept less revenue.

Create a net campaign view

Add these measures where your data access permits:

  • attributed gross sales;
  • refunds and cancellations;
  • net sales;
  • campaign acquisition charges;
  • discount and Shop Cash value;
  • cost of goods sold;
  • shipping subsidy and returns cost;
  • contribution after campaign cost.

Keep Shopify’s official metric beside the adjusted metric. Renaming adjusted net return as official Shop Campaign ROAS can confuse stakeholders.

New and Lapsed Customer Segments

Shop Campaigns supports objectives such as acquisition and win-back. Optional segment overrides can set a different maximum acquisition cost for new or lapsed customers.

New-customer analysis

Measure first purchase value, early refund rate, second-order rate and contribution margin. A higher CAC may be sensible when retained lifetime value supports it.

Lapsed-customer analysis

Define the inactivity window used by the campaign and compare reactivated customers with a similar non-targeted cohort where possible. Report incremental behavior, not only the fact that previous customers ordered again.

Avoid segment overlap

If several campaigns target similar audiences, label the campaign objective and segment in the data model. Investigate Shopify warnings about overlapping audiences and document any budget reallocation.

Admin, ShopifyQL, CSV, Apps and BI Tools

Shopify Admin

Use the Shop sales channel’s Advertising area for campaign details and customer segments. Shopify Analytics also includes Shop-related reports, including Shop Campaign ROAS. Admin is the fastest place to confirm that a number exists before diagnosing an external dashboard.

ShopifyQL and CSV

ShopifyQL exposes campaign data for reporting workflows. Shopify documents access through supported CSV exports and business-intelligence connections to the Admin GraphQL API. Keep the field names, filters, time grain and query version with every recurring export.

Analytics apps

Shopify named providers such as Triple Whale, Northbeam and Elevar as examples of apps that can integrate the data. Availability depends on the vendor’s release timeline and plan. Ask the vendor which Shop Campaign fields, segments and attribution dates it supports.

Business-intelligence tools

Power BI, Tableau or Looker Studio can surface Shop Campaigns alongside channel cost and order data through an appropriate data pipeline. The connection should use a supported Shopify app, connector or Admin API implementation with least-privilege access.

If overlapping analytics apps are creating cost or data conflicts, follow our Shopify app-audit process.

Recommended Shop Campaigns Dashboard Model

A practical dashboard should separate official source metrics, calculated business metrics and data-quality status.

Layer Recommended fields
Identity Campaign ID, name, objective, status, country and dates
Audience Customer segment, lapse window and segment override
Delivery Spend, orders, customers and target order value
Official performance Sales, ROAS, AOV and average CAC
Net performance Refunds, cancellations, net sales, COGS and contribution
Quality Extraction time, delay status, missing fields and reconciliation flag

Choose one reporting grain

Campaign-by-day supports trend and change analysis. Campaign-by-segment-by-day is more useful when CAC overrides differ, but it increases sparsity. Avoid summing ratios such as ROAS; calculate them from the underlying numerator and denominator.

Keep currency explicit

Every monetary measure needs a currency. If campaigns run across countries, store both source currency and the approved converted reporting value.

Record the refresh time

A dashboard should display when Shopify data was last refreshed and whether all sources cover the same end date. Apparent performance gaps are often refresh gaps.

Shop Campaigns Data-Quality Checklist

  • Campaign IDs and names are unique and stable.
  • Date ranges and time zones match across Shopify and external tools.
  • Currency is explicit for every cost and sales field.
  • Customer segment values are retained, not merged prematurely.
  • Spend and acquisition charges reconcile to Shopify billing.
  • Refunded and canceled orders are identified in the net view.
  • Ratios are recalculated rather than summed or averaged incorrectly.
  • The Shop Cash acquisition tag delay is considered during near-real-time checks.
  • Third-party connector support and refresh schedules are documented.
  • Admin totals are used as the first control when a connector differs.

Comparing Shop Campaigns With GA4 and Other Channels

Shopify, GA4 and advertising platforms can attribute the same order differently. A Shop Campaigns view can use offer redemption or ad-view logic, while GA4 depends on browser or consented event data and its own attribution model.

Do not force exact agreement

Use a reconciliation bridge:

  1. Match the reporting period, time zone and currency.
  2. Identify the attribution model and lookback logic.
  3. Compare order IDs where available.
  4. Separate view-through, click-through and offer-redemption paths.
  5. Account for consent loss, blockers and cross-device behavior.
  6. Explain refunds and cancellations.

If real orders are missing from web analytics entirely, work through our Shopify GA4 purchase-tracking guide.

Use the source best suited to the decision

Use Shopify for billed Shop Campaigns performance and order outcomes. Use GA4 for on-site behavior and cross-channel journeys where measurement is available. Use ad-platform reporting for platform delivery diagnostics. Present differences transparently.

Optimization Decisions to Make From the Data

Scale only after checking net contribution

A campaign with strong gross ROAS can still lose money after refunds, discounts, cost of goods and shipping. Define a contribution target before raising the budget.

Change segment CAC deliberately

Compare first-order contribution and expected lifetime value for new and lapsed customers. Higher acquisition cost should be tied to a measurable retention thesis.

Consolidate overlapping audiences

When similar campaigns compete, simplify targeting or prioritize the strongest one. Record the change date so the dashboard does not interpret budget reallocation as organic improvement.

Improve the post-click store experience

Advertising cannot compensate indefinitely for weak product pages, unclear policies or broken checkout. Shop and Shopify Product Network discovery increasingly depend on accurate catalog and store information. Our Shopify Agentic Storefronts guide explains the structured product foundation shared with newer discovery channels.
