Shopify Agentic Storefronts: Sell Through ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta in 2026

Learn how Shopify Agentic Storefronts, Shopify Catalog and direct checkout work across ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Meta in 2026.

Shopify Agentic Storefronts lets eligible merchants make products discoverable in AI shopping experiences such as ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Meta and Shop. The important detail is that these channels do not all work in the same way. Some use Shopify Catalog for product discovery and send the customer to your online store. Others can offer a Shopify-powered direct checkout inside the AI experience.

For most existing Shopify merchants, Agentic Storefronts is not a separate website and it is not a replacement for SEO, product feeds or a well-built storefront. It is a new sales-channel layer that depends on accurate product data, complete store policies, reliable inventory, correct variants and a checkout experience that works when customers arrive from an AI conversation.

Last reviewed: August 28, 2026. Shopify is actively developing these features, and availability can differ by store, customer country and channel. Google AI Mode and Gemini remain in early access for Shopify Agentic Storefronts at the time of review.

What Are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?

Agentic Storefronts is Shopify’s system for making eligible product information available to supported AI shopping channels. A shopper can describe a need conversationally, compare products and, depending on the channel, continue to either the merchant’s Shopify checkout or a Shopify-powered checkout inside the AI experience.

For example, a customer might ask an AI assistant for waterproof travel shoes under a particular price, available in a specific size and deliverable to a given location. The assistant needs more than a page containing the phrase “travel shoes.” It needs structured and current information about:

  • what the product is;
  • who it is suitable for;
  • available sizes, colors and other options;
  • price and currency;
  • stock availability;
  • images;
  • shipping and returns;
  • relevant restrictions or disclosures.

Shopify Catalog supplies this structured product layer to supported channels. The AI channel still controls its own final ranking, wording and customer interface. Inclusion in Shopify Catalog does not guarantee that a product will appear for a particular prompt.

Shopify Catalog Versus Direct Checkout

Two separate concepts are easy to confuse:

1. Shopify Catalog access

Catalog access allows an eligible channel to receive structured information about your products. This supports discovery, comparison and recommendation. It does not automatically mean that customers pay inside the AI channel.

2. Direct checkout

Direct checkout lets a customer complete a Shopify-powered purchase without leaving a supported AI channel. Channel eligibility, customer location, product type and checkout features determine whether this option is available.

A merchant can therefore have one of several experiences:

Experience Discovery Where payment happens
Catalog access with storefront checkout Product can be recommended in the AI channel Customer continues to the merchant’s Shopify checkout
Catalog access with direct checkout Product can be recommended in the AI channel Customer can pay in a Shopify-powered checkout within the channel
No Shopify Catalog access Product is excluded from Shopify’s Catalog feed to that channel, but might still be found through normal web crawling Depends on any separate discovery route

This distinction matters when you evaluate conversion tracking, checkout customizations, payment methods and privacy. Do not assume that every AI-originated order follows the same path.

How ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Meta Differ

Shopify groups several AI shopping experiences under Agentic Storefronts, but the product source and checkout path differ by channel.

ChatGPT

Shopify currently describes ChatGPT as a discovery-focused referral channel. Eligible products can be discovered through Shopify Catalog. The customer completes the purchase using the merchant’s full online store checkout, displayed in a ChatGPT in-app browser or opened in a new browser tab on the web.

This means the store’s normal branding, payment methods and checkout configuration remain relevant. Shopify currently requires the store to sell to customers in the United States for ChatGPT eligibility, although the merchant itself can be based elsewhere. Required store policies must also be published.

Google AI Mode and Gemini

Google AI Mode and Gemini use product and shipping information supplied through the Google & YouTube sales channel rather than Shopify Catalog alone. Shopify currently marks this integration as early access, so it is not available to every store. Eligible merchants receive a notification in Shopify Admin when access becomes available.

Microsoft Copilot

Eligible Microsoft Copilot experiences can use Shopify Catalog for discovery and offer Shopify-powered direct checkout to qualifying US customers. Merchants can turn off direct checkout and keep discovery active, in which case customers are redirected to the online store to buy.

Direct checkout does not necessarily reproduce every storefront feature. Shopify documents limitations involving certain products, checkout blocks, pickup methods, client-side pixels and other custom experiences. A store that depends on product personalization or mandatory checkout fields must test the channel carefully.

Meta

Meta product discovery is connected through the Facebook and Instagram by Meta sales channel. Where eligible and activated, customers can use a Shopify-powered direct checkout. Merchants should review channel-specific eligibility and product restrictions in Shopify Admin rather than assuming that every product published to the online store is automatically eligible.

Shop

Shop also appears in the Agentic area and uses Shopify Catalog to help customers discover products conversationally. Unlike third-party AI channels, Shop is operated by Shopify and its product visibility is also affected by the Shop sales-channel settings.

How to Check Shopify Agentic Storefront Settings

Open:

Shopify Admin > Sales channels > Agentic

Depending on eligibility and rollout status, this area can let you:

  • see which AI channels are available;
  • control Shopify Catalog access;
  • review whether direct checkout is available or active;
  • preview how products appear in Shopify Catalog search;
  • review product discoverability signals;
  • see performance information for supported channels;
  • control automatic enrollment in future agentic channels.

The default Allow Shopify to manage for me setting can activate available channels and enroll the store in future supported channels. If you prefer individual control, deactivate that setting and review Catalog access and direct-checkout options channel by channel.

Do not switch settings blindly. Before changing them, record the current configuration, review the supplemental terms and identify whether the store relies on any checkout feature that a direct channel might not support.

Check Store and Product Eligibility Before Optimizing

Optimization cannot make an ineligible product appear. Begin with eligibility.

Store-level checks

  • Review the Agentic section in Shopify Admin.
  • Read and accept the applicable Shopify Agentic Storefronts terms.
  • Publish accurate Terms of service, Privacy policy, and Return and refund policy.
  • Confirm that the store sells to the customer markets required by the chosen channel.
  • Make sure payment, shipping, tax and fulfillment settings are operational.
  • Verify that staff managing the channel have the required permissions.

Product-level checks

  • Use a clear product title and complete description.
  • Add useful images.
  • Assign the correct Shopify product category.
  • Maintain accurate price, availability and inventory.
  • Name variants and options unambiguously.
  • Add relevant identifiers such as GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN where appropriate.
  • Publish products to the relevant store and sales channels.
  • Check prohibited-product and channel-specific rules.

B2B-only products are not supported by Agentic Storefronts. Shopify can identify some B2B-only products through native B2B catalogs and account requirements. If a store uses custom theme logic or a third-party app to hide wholesale products or prices, confirm that Shopify Catalog does not expose a product that should remain restricted.

How to Optimize Shopify Products for AI Shopping

AI shopping optimization starts with product data that answers real buying questions. It is not a reason to repeat keywords unnaturally.

Write a precise product title

A useful title identifies the product without hiding essential attributes behind a brand slogan. Include the product type and the differentiator a shopper actually uses to choose it.

Weak:

Everyday Essential

More informative:

Women's Waterproof Trail Running Jacket – Lightweight, Packable

Avoid placing every color and size in the main title if those belong in structured variant options.

Answer conversational questions in the description

A product description should help answer questions such as:

  • What problem does this solve?
  • Who is it for?
  • What material is it made from?
  • What are its dimensions or capacity?
  • How should it be used or cared for?
  • What is included?
  • What is not compatible with it?
  • Are there age, safety or regulatory restrictions?

For ChatGPT product discovery, Shopify advises merchants to include relevant legal disclosures within the first 6,000 characters of the description. Do not place essential restrictions only in an image or hidden tab.

Use correct product categories and attributes

Product categories help Shopify understand what an item is and which structured attributes apply. A generic or incorrect category can make otherwise detailed product data harder to interpret.

After assigning the category, complete the attributes that affect purchase decisions. Depending on the product, these might include material, color, size, age group, fit, compatibility, capacity or technical specifications.

Make variant names understandable without the page design

Do not rely on a visual swatch alone. Values such as Option 1: A or Style: Default provide little context to an AI system or a customer comparing products. Prefer meaningful names such as:

  • Color: Forest Green
  • Size: 750 ml
  • Connection: USB-C
  • Pack quantity: 12

Variant accuracy also affects the storefront. If customers receive the wrong item after selecting a size or color, use our guide to diagnose why Shopify adds the wrong product variant to the cart.

Keep price and availability reliable

AI discovery is only useful when the product remains purchasable at the represented price. Check:

  • variant-level prices;
  • Compare-at prices;
  • inventory by location;
  • market-specific catalogs;
  • currency and fixed-market pricing;
  • ERP, PIM and supplier-feed synchronization.

If a product page displays a previous value after an update, follow the diagnostic steps in our Shopify stale-price troubleshooting guide.

Use images that explain the product

Include a clean main image and supporting images that show scale, use, important details and variations. Product imagery should be consistent with the title and selected variant. Do not use an image to communicate information that must also exist as text or structured product data.

Complete store policies and FAQs

Customers shopping conversationally often ask about delivery, returns, warranty, compatibility and product care before asking for a specific item. Keep store policies accurate and use the Shopify Knowledge Base app, where available, to review and improve the facts and FAQs that supported AI experiences can use.

The same information quality helps conventional discovery. Review our complete Shopify keyword and SEO guide when improving collection, product and content architecture.

Use Shopify Catalog Mapping for Custom Product Data

Many established stores do not keep their best customer-facing product information in Shopify’s default title and description fields. A store might use:

  • metafields for technical specifications;
  • metaobjects for reusable product facts;
  • tag prefixes for product grouping;
  • title delimiters to connect related items;
  • custom fields supplied by an ERP or PIM;
  • Combined Listings for related products.

Shopify Catalog Mapping lets merchants influence which sources Shopify Catalog uses for titles, descriptions and categories. It can also support custom variant grouping and customer-facing option names.

Open:

Sales channels > Agentic > Sources > Review how your product data is sent to Shopify Catalog

Before saving a mapping change:

  1. Choose representative products from different collections.
  2. Preview the current Catalog output.
  3. Record which field is wrong or incomplete.
  4. Map only the field that has a better source.
  5. Check product grouping and option names.
  6. Save the change.
  7. Allow for processing delay.
  8. Recheck multiple products rather than only one ideal example.

Mapping can improve the source data that Shopify Catalog receives, but it does not guarantee a particular rank or wording in an external AI channel.

What Do /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt Do?

Shopify stores automatically provide agent-discovery URLs:

  • /agents.md
  • /llms.txt
  • /llms-full.txt

Shopify describes /agents.md as the canonical agent-discovery location. By default, these files can provide store context such as the store name, policies, sitemap and discovery endpoints.

These files do not replace Shopify Catalog. Catalog is the structured product source for supported Agentic Storefronts channels. Discovery files help open-web agents understand the store, while Catalog supplies controlled product data to activated channels.

You do not need a third-party application merely to create default versions of these files. If you customize them, keep the information accurate and avoid contradictory instructions. Review the output after any theme or app change that affects discovery.

Test the Whole Purchase Path, Not Just Product Discovery

A product appearing in a Catalog preview is not proof that customers can complete an order successfully.

Test the storefront checkout path

For a referral experience such as ChatGPT, test:

  • the product URL;
  • correct variant selection;
  • market and currency;
  • cart behavior;
  • shipping rates;
  • discounts;
  • payment methods;
  • mobile checkout;
  • order confirmation;
  • analytics attribution.

Test direct-checkout limitations

A direct AI-channel checkout can intentionally omit nonessential storefront elements. Check whether the channel supports every feature required to sell the product, including:

  • subscriptions;
  • bundles;
  • product personalization;
  • mandatory checkout fields;
  • upsells or surcharges;
  • pickup or local delivery;
  • customer sign-in;
  • discount and validation functions;
  • consent collection;
  • analytics and pixels.

Microsoft Copilot’s current Shopify direct-checkout documentation, for example, says that Google Analytics and custom client-side pixels do not fire in that checkout. Server-to-server events can behave differently from the tracking used on the online store.

Create a separate measurement plan for each checkout path. If Shopify orders appear but GA4 or Google Ads does not record purchases correctly, use our guide to diagnose missing Shopify purchase conversions.

Check apps and customizations

Audit any application that changes product data, prices, variants, inventory, checkout, consent or tracking. An application can work correctly on the online store and still be irrelevant or unsupported in a direct channel.

If the store has accumulated overlapping applications, begin with a structured Shopify app audit instead of adding another tool for every AI channel.

Privacy, Product Control and Opting Out

Shopify lets merchants manage Catalog access and, where supported, direct checkout for individual agentic channels after turning off Allow Shopify to manage for me.

Review what each choice means:

Keep Catalog access and direct checkout active

The channel can receive structured product data and eligible customers can purchase through its direct Shopify checkout.

Keep Catalog access but turn off direct checkout

The channel can continue to discover and recommend products, but customers are redirected to the online store to buy.

Turn off Catalog access for a channel

Shopify stops providing Catalog data to that channel going forward. Shopify states that removal can take up to seven days. The product may still be discoverable through normal web crawling, indexing or other feeds.

Hide a product completely

If a product must not be publicly discoverable, simply turning off one Catalog channel may be insufficient. Shopify documents the Unlisted product status as a broader control, but this also removes the product from sitemaps, search engines and online-store search. Review the commercial and SEO impact before using it.

When direct checkout is active, the relevant AI channel receives the customer and order information required to complete the transaction. Review Shopify’s data-sharing documentation, channel terms and your own Privacy policy before activation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Shopify Agentic Storefronts?

They are Shopify-supported sales-channel experiences that make eligible products discoverable in AI channels and, where supported, let customers use a Shopify-powered direct checkout.

Is Shopify Agentic Storefronts a separate website?

No. For an existing Shopify merchant, it is a sales-channel and product-discovery layer connected to the store’s products, policies, inventory and checkout.

Do I need an app to sell Shopify products through ChatGPT?

Shopify says eligible products can be made available to ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog without installing a separate ChatGPT sales-channel app. Review Sales channels > Agentic and the current eligibility requirements.

Can customers complete payment inside ChatGPT?

Shopify currently describes ChatGPT as a discovery-focused referrer. Customers complete the purchase in the merchant’s Shopify checkout, shown in an in-app browser or opened in a new web tab.

Does Shopify Agentic Storefronts support direct checkout?

Some supported channels, including eligible Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode and Gemini, and Meta experiences, can offer Shopify-powered direct checkout. Availability and supported features vary.

Is Google AI Mode available to every Shopify store?

No. Shopify currently labels Google AI Mode and Gemini as early access. Eligible merchants receive a notification when the integration becomes available.

Does Shopify Catalog guarantee that my product appears in AI answers?

No. Shopify Catalog supplies structured product information, but each AI channel controls its own ranking, recommendations and final presentation.

How do I improve Shopify product visibility in AI shopping?

Use accurate titles, detailed descriptions, correct categories, meaningful variants, useful images, current prices and inventory, complete policies and relevant identifiers. Review Catalog Mapping when important data is stored in metafields or other custom sources.

What is Shopify Catalog Mapping?

It lets merchants influence which Shopify data sources Catalog uses for product titles, descriptions, categories and grouping. It is particularly useful when product information is stored in metafields, metaobjects, tags or custom structures.

Does blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt turn off Agentic Storefronts?

No. Shopify Catalog access is separate from open-web crawler access. A robots.txt rule does not stop Shopify from supplying Catalog data to an activated agentic channel.

Can I opt out of one AI channel?

Yes. After turning off the automatic management setting, eligible merchants can manage individual channel access. Turning off Catalog access does not necessarily remove products already discoverable through normal web indexing.

How long does it take to remove Catalog access?

Shopify states that it can take up to seven days before product data is no longer shared through Shopify Catalog after access is turned off.

Are B2B-only products supported?

No. Agentic Storefronts supports direct-to-consumer products. Stores using custom wholesale controls should verify that restricted products are not unintentionally represented as public D2C offers.

Will my normal analytics work in direct checkout?

Not always. Direct channels can use different event and pixel behavior. For example, Shopify documents that client-side Google Analytics and custom pixels do not fire in Microsoft Copilot’s direct checkout.

Do I need to create /agents.md and /llms.txt manually?

No. Shopify stores provide default agent-discovery URLs automatically. They are separate from Shopify Catalog and do not replace its structured product feed.

Should I install an AI SEO app for Agentic Storefronts?

Not by default. First review Shopify’s native Agentic settings, Catalog output, product data, discovery files and Knowledge Base capabilities. Add an application only when it solves a verified gap.

Final Recommendation

Treat Shopify Agentic Storefronts as a real commerce integration, not as a one-click visibility switch.

The most effective preparation is operational:

  1. make product data complete and unambiguous;
  2. keep price, inventory and variants accurate;
  3. publish clear policies and answers;
  4. understand which channels use referral checkout and which can use direct checkout;
  5. test the purchase and measurement path channel by channel.

A store with clean product architecture and a reliable checkout has a stronger foundation for conventional search, paid campaigns and AI shopping at the same time. Explore more Shopify development and troubleshooting guides for product, theme, checkout, analytics and integration problems.
